'I feel like a grandmother': Brand new cat mom repeatedly brings her newborn kittens to her human, rolling over and purring, no matter how comfortable her own bed is, and the internet reassures her that it's a actually compliment

Being a mom is a difficult job… for everyone, humans and cats alike. You would think that since cats are such "independent" creatures, or are at least known that way, that cat moms would not have all that much to do. But you would be wrong. Cat moms need to teach their kittens how to drink water without getting it up their nose, how to walk, how to communicate with their humans in a way that makes sure the humans know exactly everything that they have to do for their cat overlords. 

And sometimes, just like any mom, cat moms need a break too. But their can't leave their wiggly kitties alone for too long, otherwise, shenanigans might happen. And so they look for help, and every once in a while, the lucky babysitter turns out to be… us. Their humans. The cat moms bring their kittens to us and go have a nap. And yes, we 100% feel lucky about it - honored, even. Because we know what it means to have a cat mom trust us this much.

    So recently the cat distribution system decided to bless me with a pregnant stray cat but for her health | took her to the vet to confirm and also have her checked. I knew she didn't have owners since I had been seeing her outside for a while but couldn't catch her and everybody claimed she wasn't theirs so I fostered her, but a few days ago she had them in my bed.

    She did have her own room since I was told cats wanted peace and quiet when they give birth, it also had a big bed for a comfy birth. I was a little upset when she gave birth on my bed and cried a little ③, but I let her finish and nurse until she left to get some food then I put gloves on and moved the kittens to her bed and I also moved her food and water bowl to the room they were in so she could see them.

    I did buy another mattress, I know I could've cleaned it but I couldn't stomach the thought. Anyways since she gave birth she has been very clingy and has moved her babies from her room to mines, even if I'm on the couch she'll move them where I am and lay on my lap purring and rolling over.

    She's a little fat so I try to make sure she doesnt fall lol. I was a little concerned because a friend of mine told me she might not be comfortable in her room and that's the last thing I wanted. Before she gave birth I did my best making sure the room was warm, clean, safe, and quiet, but she prefers to keep them by me.

    Since then I moved her belongs, herself and her kittens into my room and she seems more fond of it, but she still puts them beside me on my bed and lays with us (I feel like a grandmother ), but I'm curious why she does this and for the safety of the kittens I want to try to stop it because i keep waking up to her and the kittens in my bed right behind me and I'm a wild sleeper

  • We know that this person is concerned, but we could not help but smile throughout reading this. They may not realize it yet, but this is one of the highest honors that any cat can give. She trusts you - with herself and with her babies. You are truly her safe space, and that is amazing.

    llamaintheroom She knows you're a safe haven! It's actually a compliment when they do this. She wants your help taking care of them :) some cats may want privacy but she obviously doesn't. I would let her do this when you're awake, it'll help her mentally. During sleeping periods maybe close the door to your room?

    Obligatory- please get her and babies fixed asap! There are (probably) low cast spay and neuter options near you. I volunteer at a shelter and so many of them are overfilled w kittens Good luck cat grandma haha

  • She is a brand new momma, she is tired, she needs help - just like any human mom. The first few days are the hardest, right? We're glad that she has you, that there is someone out there that she trusts and that is willing to do so much to help her.

    Available-Meat-5477 For keeping the babies safe while you're thrashing around in your sleep, is there a way to make a flat empty surface near your head like a large nightstand or maybe drag over a plastic bin or chair to the side of the bed? You could put down a towel or better yet a cardboard box/cat bed with shallow raised sides to keep the lil ones from rolling or climbing out. That way mama can rest with them or you and keep you both in proximity with no one getting rolled onto at night. Con

    Pale_Instance3256 OP She's in my room currently and before I sleep I do place her kittens in her cat bed that's beside my bed but would wake up to her laying behind me feeding or sleeping someone suggested a weighted blanket though.
